Position: Technology Fellow (Part-time)

We are currently looking for a Technology Fellow who matches our enthusiasm for the mission at hand and is seeking to apply your technical skills for social impact, locally and globally. We seek someone who is competent with diverse web technologies and is interested in applying them socially oriented challenges.

In return, we offer an education in tackling the tough challenges of our times. You will have the chance to build an extensive body of work in diverse areas including education, financial inclusion, human rights, public health, urban planning, and justice reform.

If you are searching for a place where you can drive a technology development process from start to finish, then we might be your wild and wonderful dream come true. This is a three-month, part-time fellowship to start, with the opportunity for full-time employment thereafter.

Responsibilities

Our clients engage us for complex, multidisciplinary projects that span the globe. One week you might be developing a prototype for a mobile banking application and the next you might be building a knowledge sharing platform for civic organizers in the Middle East. The opportunities are diverse, and depending on your skill set, you may be asked to:

• Create detailed technical requirements for client implementation
• Define a project’s technical roadmap
• Develop front and/or back end infrastructure
• Manage off-site technical teams
• Serve diverse client technical needs on an ad hoc basis
• Maintain and improve our publishing platform, theReboot.org

In addition, we support entrepreneurship in all forms. We actively encourage our team to develop new projects in our areas of practices. From concept to pitch to execution, you will have the chance to get our team working on your ideas and will be competitively compensated for crackerjack initiative.

Qualifications

We’re open to a range of profiles. This role may be suited for a veteran web developer or a student looking to build a portfolio of work with demonstrated social impact. Similarly, this role may be suited for an individual with social sector experience who also wields significant technical skills.

Key characteristics we do look for:

• Conversant in key issues around topics in one (or more) of our practice areas: international development, governance, and civic media.
• Experience working on cross-functional project teams and can explain technology topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Proven track record in delivering high-quality products on time, with intelligent, well-documented code.
• A strong knowledge of HTML 5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery, and browser technology.
• A love of web standards.
• An ability to translate a design into semantic markup and CSS with pixel perfection.
• A working knowledge of PHP, Ruby on Rails, or Python.
• Experience developing web applications for a variety of devices, such as mobile and touch.
• Experience with a number of content management systems — WordPress, ExpressionEngine, and MoveableType are all good.

Terms

This position is currently offered as a three-month, part-time (20 hours a week) commitment. We are looking for the ideal candidate to start immediately, working out of our lovely office in downtown Manhattan.

We offer a reasonable stipend for the fellowship, and opportunities for increased pay for specific projects depending on your strengths and our client’s needs. The ideal candidate will be considered for a full-time, salaried position after three months.

We will happily support you in earning academic credit if applicable.
